GAINESVILLE -- Starting Thursday (15th), Floridians may again use exclusion devices to remove bats who have set up roosts and living quarters in homes, eaves and attics.

Exclusion devices, which allow bats to leave homes but not re-enter, are banned from mid-April to mid-August because that's bat nesting season in Florida. Exclusion devices would keep mother bats from returning to their pups, which would die and leave a mess wherever the roost was.

Whatever method you use to deal with a bat infestation, University of Florida wildlife expert Dr Shelly Johnson recommends hiring a professional for the job. If you do clear out the bats yourself, remember to use gloves, as well as a respirator if you're handling bat guano. Remember, it's against the law to harm bats.
