Fmr Venezuelan Political Prisoner Charged In Deadly Coral Gables Hit & Run

A former Venezuelan political prisoner and deputy of the Voluntad Popular party is charged with leaving the scene of a deadly accident in Coral Gables.

A Miami police report says Gilber Caro ran on foot after the SUV he was driving collided with a red light runner at Southwest 8th Street and LeJeune Road early Monday morning. The driver of the car died. A woman in a third vehicle hit was hurt.

Prosecutors admit Caro didn't cause the crash, and he might not have faced charge if he stayed on the scene.

The police report goes on to say hours after the crash, Caro called the registered owner of the SUV he was driving and told her he was involved in an accident, and she should call 911.

The 50-year-old's attorney isn't questioning the charges and only asked that a standard bond be set.

The judge did set the standard bond of $15,000.

Caro said he has lived in the United States for two-and-a-half years.
