Stuart residents were rallying yesterday before a City Commission meeting in an effort to save the Brightline station they still hope will be built downtown.

Commissioners last month voted to rescind their agreements with the rail line.

Commissioner Christopher Collins says his issue is not with the station, but with what the deal has become. Collins says that back in 2018, there was an agreement between Brightline and Martin County that was a 50/50 split, but now Stuart faced a $45 million bill, while the county would only be out $15 million. Essentially he wants Brightline to put up a higher share of the costs.

The city is considering renegotiating its terms with the high-speed rail.

There were no answers during the meeting.

Regardless of the train we need a parking structure.
