Two dead after construction accident in Wayne County
Two people are dead following a crash at a construction plant Wednesday morning in Wayne County. According to reports, Brian Edwards of Honesdale, was driving a dump truck at Wayco, Inc. Quarry and Asphalt Plant in Palmyra Township when he suffered a suspected medical emergency and fell unconscious, causing the dump truck to roll backward and hit James Martzen of Waymart. Martzen and Edwards both died as a result. Autopsies for both men are scheduled for Friday in Wayne County.
54 rescued from Lackawanna Coal mine after power problem
Dozens of people were rescued after a power failure trapped them underground at a Lackawanna County tourist attraction. According to reports, more than 50 people were stuck several hundred feet underground when a mining car at the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour lost power. Operators used a metal cage to pull everyone to the surface. Officials at the tourist site hope to have the mine car fixed in the next few days.

Some NEPA property owners can sign up for real estate alerts
Property owners in Luzerne County can sign up for alerts related to real estate filings. According to reports, the Luzerne County Recorder of Deeds office has launched a free record alert system that will inform county property owners of any filings recorded to their real estate. The alert system is provided by Recorder of Deeds vendor, Landex. Property owners may register up to five PINs or names for monitoring. PINs are available on tax bills or by searching for a parcel on the county’s free GIS/Mapping portal at luzernecounty.org.
Three suspects arrested after brawl at Montage waterpark
Four people were hurt and three were arrested following a brawl at Montage Mountain Friday night. 25-year-old Nyree Pemberton and 22-year-old Divine Taylor both from Ithaca, New York are locked up in Lackawanna County Prison after a fight that broke out in the parking lot of Montage Waterpark late Friday night after the mountain’s first adult swim party of the season. A man and a woman ended up slashed. Police say the fight and stabbings remain an active investigation in Lackawanna County.
Delays expected on I-81 in Luzerne County
Drivers in Luzerne County can expect to see delays on Interstate 81 north into next week. PennDOT announced that bridge inspection work on I-81 Northbound between the Dorrance Exit (155) and the Wilkes-Barre exit (168) is scheduled to continue until Tuesday. The work that started this morning will continue from 9 a.m to 3 p.m daily.
Luzerne County man sentenced for deadly DUI crash
In Luzerne County Court a Nanticoke man who admitted to driving drunk when he crashed his vehicle that killed his friend and a woman in December of 2021 was sentenced to up to 10 years in state prison. 43 year old Edward Gordon, of Garfield Street, was sentenced on charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence and driving under the influence. Gordon pled guilty to the charges in April.
Pa. Senate passes bill to protect property owners from squatters
The Pennsylvania Senate unanimously approved legislation to protect property owners from squatters. Senate Bill 1236 would codify Pennsylvania case law to establish more certainty for homeowners, landlords and law enforcement who encounter squatters, announced bill sponsor Sen. Dan Laughlin. The measure was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration.
Murder conviction will stand for Scranton man
A Scranton man serving life in prison for murder had his petition to have another day in court denied by U.S. District Judge Malachy Mannion. 33 year old Neil Pal's 2014 conviction for the murder of 24 year old Frank Bonacci of Dunmore will stand. At trial, Pal admitted he drove Jason Dominick and Bonacci, 24, of Dunmore, to an area off Ridge Row in Scranton, expecting they were going to fight. He claimed Dominick shot Bonacci in the head instead. Dominick, 34, of Scranton, was convicted at a separate trial of third-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison.
Animal cruelty charges filed against NEPA couple
A Lackawanna County couple have been charged with animal cruelty and neglect according to a criminal complaint. Two dogs and one cat were rescued on June 7 from 605 Meadow Lane in Clarks Summit, an abandoned home, where they had been left to survive on trash. According to a Humane Officer a third dog, dead for months, was decomposing in one of the rooms. The home’s listed owner, Erin DeCicco, and her husband, Anthony DeCicco were arraigned Tuesday night and released on bail. They have preliminary hearings scheduled for June 25.

Registered voters can begin requesting their mail ballot online for the Nov. 5 presidential election through a newly designed online application. The Department of State announced the redesigned online application, which is also available in Spanish and Chinese, provides clearer instructions for registered voters requesting their ballot and streamlines the application process. The redesign also improves the application process for military and overseas civilian voters by directing them to the federal form required to request their ballot, the state said. The application will be available until Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 5 p.m., the last day to apply for a mail-in ballot under the law. Mail ballot applications must be received by a voter’s county elections board by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Investigating the scamming of a Lackawanna County department
The Lackawanna County DA's office is investigating a scam that targeted the County Department of Arts and Culture out of nearly $60,000. Investigators are seeking the identities of IP addresses associated with an electronic fund transfer seemingly made to the vendor that supplied rental tents for December's annual Winter Market on Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton. The person requesting the funds of Maureen McGuigan, the county's director of Arts and Culture, was a criminal who mimicked the email and tone of McGuigan's usual point of contact for the tent rental business, L & A Tent Rentals, of New Jersey. The county awarded L&A the contract and finance records show the county paid out $56,689.75 in January to cover the rental bill. As for the Winter Market, it’s expected to return to Courthouse Square this December. However, vendors will be housed in tents bought outright for $175,000, raised through the county’s share of state online gambling taxes.
Local couple wanted for alleged immigration scam
Authorities in Luzerne County are looking for a couple accused of ripping off nearly a dozen people who needed immigration help. Daniel Martinez claimed to be an attorney to those needing help with things like getting legal working papers, while Cruz Maria, was described in court documents as his wife, helped sell this image. The two are facing counts of theft by deception. Martinez is also charged with forgery and criminal use of a communication facility. Investigators asked that anyone who either thinks they’ve been defrauded or knows where they are to call Detective Neil Murphy at 570-825-1674.

Investigating vandalism at Lackawanna County park
Police in Lackawanna County are searching for vandals who damaged sports equipment. Soccer gear at VFW Park in Dickson City was wrecked over the weekend according to officials with The Mid Valley Youth Soccer League. A board member noticed the bent and broken goals and other damage. The equipment might cost as much as $5,000 to replace. The league is considering going to Dickson City borough council for help with security and lighting at the park off Jermyn Avenue.
NEPA community rallies for child hit by car
A community in Luzerne County came together Sunday to show support for 10-year-old girl Alexis Brown, who was struck by a car last week while walking to the Butler Street Park. Alexis' parents say she is being cared for at Geisinger near Danville after suffering a brain bleed that has since healed, a broken leg, and facial injuries. The American Grill of Exeter is hosting a giveback night, 'Alexis's Amigos" on June 12th and 13th, just mention Alexis when ordering dine-in or take-out.
One dead after standoff in Scranton
An hours-long standoff Saturday morning in Scranton has ended, with a woman wounded and one man dead. Police responded to a home along the 1600 block of Pine Street just after 10 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, a 27-year-old woman suffering a gunshot wound came out of the home and was taken to the hospital. Police were then joined by the Scranton Special Operations Unit and Lackawanna County SWAT to help arrest the alleged shooter and spent hours communicating with him, hoping he would surrender peacefully. Around 2 p.m., police say tactical members went into the home to search for the man but were ambushed with gunfire from the attic. The standoff ended just after 5 p.m. when police found the man dead in the attic of the home from a single gunshot wound. Authorities say it was a domestic-related incident, and not a threat to the community. The suspect's name has not yet been released.
Local hospital put newborn babies at risk; two died
Immediate danger. That was the determination the Pa. Department of Health made for Lehigh Valley Hospital in Hazleton. That came when they inspected the facility following the recent deaths of two newborns. In both cases, there was a delay in response from pediatricians on call at the facility. In the two separate cases, newborns died shortly after birth from complications related to collapsed lungs. In another case, the pediatrician couldn't be reached and didn't call back until an hour later. The Department of Health also found other deficiencies in staffing. Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton could have lost federal funding but has avoided that due to corrective actions they are said to have taken.
Luzerne County man sentenced for selling fentanyl
A Luzerne County man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for selling fentanyl. U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam announced 62-year-old Lee Crawford of Wilkes-Barre received the sentence for conspiracy to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl and for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. Crawford previously pleaded guilty and admitted to conspiring with other individuals to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl in the Luzerne County area between July 2020 and February 2021.
