Louisa County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A Louisa County man has avoided serving a minimum 12-year prison sentence after bringing ammunition into Turks and Caicos through a security checkpoint.

Tyler Wenrich, 31, was arrested in April after traveling to the island of Grand Turk on a cruise ship and being caught bringing ammunition through a security checkpoint.

Wenrich was facing a potential sentence of 12 years in prison due to the Turks and Caicos laws on mandatory minimums for firearms and ammunition-related offenses. According to his wife, Jeriann Wenrich, he may have accidentally brought the same bag he takes to the gun range with him on the cruise.

In May, Wenrich entered a guilty plea to two counts of ammunition possession. Wenrich is now able to return to the U.S. He’s been sentenced to time served and fined $9,000.
