Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A male suspect is fighting for his life after being shot by a Richmond Police officer on Tuesday.

Police say the incident occurred near East Broad Street and North 29th Street. Officers were responding to a call for a mental subject with a knife at around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The man had reportedly been threatening people earlier in the day with the knife. While officers were negotiating with the man, who was inside his residence, they learned that a woman was inside. She was screaming that she was unable to escape.

Officers then entered the apartment, and the man was shot by an officer and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A knife was found as officers tried to provide medical assistance to the man.

No one else was injured, and the officer has been placed on leave in accordance with policy. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“We have already begun an investigation into the actions of that officer at this time,” said Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. “So [the officer] is, obviously like anyone who’s been in a situation like this, is emotional, but we are happy that no officers were injured during this encounter.”
