The parents obviously did nothing wrong or they would have been charged criminally! The Detective willingly and knowingly choose a career that is inherently dangerous and as the result put himself in danger not these parents who observed their constitutional right to bear arms which is protected by the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the Pennsylvania Constitution under Article:1 Section:21.

Qualified immunity should be a 2 way street. An officer hurt in the line of duty, doing his chosen profession shouldn't have recourse to sue someone who injures them, since they're not liable if they hurt someone else in the course of that duty.
