NEWTON, NJ—The Newton Town Council held their July meeting on Monday, July 15 at 7 p.m. and on the agenda was the reading and presentation of a special proclamation. The proclamation honored Ariel Franzone, a recent Newton High School graduate who has been part of Girl Scout Troop #5688 since kindergarten and has recently received her Gold Award.

Franzone’s Gold Award Project was raising awareness about the challenges one may face with having Dyslexia and the resources that are available so that people do not have to struggle...as she did.

Last year, while working towards her Gold Award, she went before the town council and other organizations, including Pass It Along and within Newton schools, to speak about her project. The project included collecting over 150 books and tools to provide resources that were then distributed among the Newton School District. She has approximately 100 documented hours that went into earning her Gold Award.

The Newton Town Council presented Franzone with a proclamation declaring October as Dyslexia Awareness month last year during their October meeting after she went before them. She was also named a Hometown Hero by Congressman Josh Gottheimer and presented a certificate in recognition of all her efforts on December 15, 2023.

This past Monday, the council recognized Franzone with another special proclamation, one to honor her and all her efforts.

“Ariel has devoted many hours to earning her Gold Award, working with diligence, and making sacrifices in order to achieve it...” the proclamation read. “The Mayor and Town Council of the Town of Newton do hereby recognize and extend our sincere congratulations to Ariel Franzone for having earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, an honor for both her and for those who have guided her, with best wishes for a bright and successful future.”
