Derrick Henry is a name synonymous with winning fantasy football leagues. However, the Baltimore Ravens are hoping to win the Super Bowl by adding him this year.

Having skipped adding any other massively key pieces this offseason, the world appears to be placed on Henry’s shoulders in Baltimore. Will he have a great season?

Here’s a look at whether the pressure will burst the running back’s pipes or turn him into a diamond.

Derrick Henry enters 2024 as a boom-or-bust prospect

The Ravens have built their philosophy on offense as a run-first team. However, it is stunning that the team hasn’t been able to nail down a bellcow running back in the Lamar Jackson era. Finally, in 2024, they have their best candidate yet.

At face value, Henry is set up to thrive in the team’s run-heavy offense. However, there is one catch with the addition: his age. Henry will turn 31 this season. As a bigger back, his durability has trumped most of the other contemporary running backs. However, no one lasts forever.

The Titans, who enjoyed Henry for years, allowed him to leave. As such, they had to have a reason why. Looking at his production over the last two years, the answer appears to be clear.

Henry’s production has seen a stark decline from 2022 to 2023. In 2022, he earned 1538 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. In 2023, the running back’s production declined, earning 1167 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry.

But the most striking thing about the decline is the number of games played between the two years. Henry earned 400 more yards in 2022 than 2023 in just 16 games. In 2023, he played in 17 games. In other words, despite playing in fewer games in the former season, Henry managed to earn 400 more yards.

Of course, some may argue that Henry didn’t benefit from the Titans chasing teams, which required throwing more than rushing. However, had Henry dominated like in years past, he might have been able to keep the Titans in games well enough to maintain his usage.

This could be the last year of Henry’s first-string prime. Will the Ravens find some extra gas for Henry or will they get a lemon?

At this point, no one can be certain, but Derrick Henry can only hope to put forth his best effort.
