Cowboys QB Receives Sobering Take After Poor Performance

    By Matthew Schmidt,

When the Dallas Cowboys traded for Trey Lance shortly before last season, they may been hoping to land a potential long-term insurance plan at quarterback.

Thus far, it doesn’t look like that is coming to fruition.

Lance got a chance to show his stuff in the Cowboys’ first preseason game on Sunday, but instead, he fell flat, going 25-for-41 with 188 yards in a 13-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Tony Catalina of Pro Football Network was certainly not enamored with Lance’s performance against the Rams and thinks Jerry Jones and Co. may have misjudged him.

“There is no reason to be completely out on Lance right now, but it’s clear that he is a long way away from ever actually being a threat to Dak Prescott if that’s what Jerry Jones and Co. were thinking,” Catalina wrote.

Prescott is entering the final year of his deal and has yet to make much progress on a contract extension with the Cowboys. If Prescott departs next offseason, Lance—at the moment—would be first in line to grab the starting job.

But the former San Francisco 49ers first-round pick has given Dallas very little confidence that he is ready to take the reins under center if Prescott leaves.

The Cowboys have all sorts of issues heading into 2024

Lance’s lackluster preseason showing is the least of the Cowboys’ problems right now.

Dallas has still not come to terms with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who continues to hold out in search of a new contract.

Like Prescott, Lamb is going into the final year of his deal, but unlike Prescott, Lamb has not shown up to camp, and Jones didn’t exactly do himself any favors by saying that the Cowboys did not have a sense of urgency to get things done soon.

Jones has walked back his comments, but there is no question that he has peeved Lamb, who reacted in kind on social media.

Not only that, but Prescott is heading into what could be a lame duck year at quarterback, and there may be some internal dissension.

The Cowboys have reeled off three straight 12-win campaigns and are coming off of an NFC East division title. They are absolutely talented enough to win the division again. However, you have to wonder if all of the issues the club is currently experiencing will end up sabotaging it this coming season.
