Detroit Lions Coach Offers Encouraging Injury Update on Star Playmaker

The Detroit Lions suffered an injury scare in practice earlier this week. Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was forced from practice on Monday because of a hamstring injury.

Reports swirled about the severity of Gibbs’ injury, as some feared that he could be sidelined for a lengthy period of time. Head coach Dan Campbell revealed that his phone was ringing nonstop as people were looking for an update.

Early Wednesday morning, he provided one while making an appearance on 97.1 The Ticket. It was encouraging, as Campbell doesn’t believe his star running back will be sidelined too long.

“I think we’re gonna be fine here. So, I think we’ll be good,” Campbell told the radio station.

In 15 games as a rookie, Gibbs showcased his dynamic dual-threat skill set. He ran the ball 182 times for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, adding 52 receptions for 316 yards and one more score.

He is once again expected to be a big part of the team’s offense, sharing the backfield with veteran David Montgomery.

Gibbs wasn’t the only player who suffered an injury on Monday. Rookie first-round pick, defensive back Terrion Arnold, was evaluated for an upper-body injury. Fellow rookie second-round pick, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., injured his ankle the same day.

Because of the mounting injuries, Campbell has decided to scale things back a little bit at practice. Wednesday will now be a no-pads practice as the team prepares for their second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

During his radio appearance, Campbell also provided an update on quarterback Hendon Hooker. Hooker suffered a concussion in their first preseason game against the New York Giants, ending his night early.

The update on the Tennessee product was a positive one as well, as he is trending in the right direction. “I think there’s a good chance. I can’t say absolutely yes, but it’s trending the right way,” Campbell told 97.1 The Ticket.

His appearance against the Giants was the first time he was on a football field since tearing his ACL in his final college game with the Volunteers. A third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Hooker essentially redshirted his entire first year as a pro rehabbing from the knee injury.
