Patriots Coach Makes Surprising Statement On QB Battle

Throughout New England Patriots training camp, the general expectation has been that Jacoby Brissett will win the starting quarterback job.

But it appears that it isn’t set in stone.

Following Drake Maye’s impressive preseason showing against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night, head coach Jerod Mayo said that there is still a chance that the rookie wins the job.

“You know, we have three more days of training camp practices, and it’s our job as coaches to evaluate, and the competition isn’t over,” Mayo said, via WEEI. “They’re still gonna go out there, and they have to show not only, you know, themselves and their coaches, but their teammates. So it’s definitely still a competition.”

Maye went 6-for-11 with 47 yards while carrying the ball four times for 15 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots’ 14-13 loss to the Eagles. Meanwhile, Brissett went 3-of-7 with 17 yards and an interception.

New England selected Maye with the third overall pick of the NFL Draft in April, but all indications were that Maye was very raw and probably wouldn’t be on the field in Week 1.

Mayo himself even said that Maye had a lot to work on back in the spring.

However, Maye may be gaining ground on Brissett.

Would it be wise for the Patriots to start Drake Maye?

Of course, the question is whether or not it would actually be a wise decision for the Patriots to roll Maye out there for the season opener.

The University of North Carolina product is still very green around the gills, and many questioned his throwing mechanics heading into the draft.

Given what New England just went through with Mac Jones, you would figure the franchise would want to be as patient as possible with Maye moving forward.

Chances are, Brissett will be the one taking snaps in Week 1. He has experience, and he is a perfect bridge starter as Maye prepares to take the reins for the future.

Plus, the Patriots don’t exactly have many proven weapons offensively, so running Maye out there too soon could be a case of throwing the kid the wolves.

Not only that, but Mayo is likely not going to officially name a starter just yet. There are still several weeks before the start of the regular season, so he wants to ensure that everyone remains motivated in camp.

We’ll see what the Pats decide to do come next month.
