Former Player Reveals Bold Take On Steelers’ QB Situation

    By Matthew Schmidt,

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a decision to make under center for the start of the regular season, and it may not be so cut and dry.

The Steelers added both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields during the offseason, and most anticipated that Wilson would end up winning the starting quarterback job.

However, a calf injury to Wilson threw a wrench into things, and his preseason debut with Pittsburgh didn’t exactly help matters.

Wilson completed eight of his 10 passes in the Steelers’ loss to the Buffalo Bills, but he threw for just 47 yards and was sacked three times.

Fields didn’t exactly look terrific himself, going 11-for-17 with 92 yards and posting a 78.6 passer rating, but now, there is genuine debate as to who Pittsburgh should roll out in Week 1.

Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky thinks it should be Fields.

It really isn’t an enviable decision for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Neither Wilson nor Fields is exactly a tantalizing option, especially for a Pittsburgh squad that is trying to contend in the rugged AFC.

Is Justin Fields the smarter option for the Steelers?

Here’s the thing: it seems fairly hard to envision the Steelers legitimately contending for a Super Bowl this season. Pittsburgh has all sorts of issues offensively, and while its defense is viewed favorably, it isn’t exactly the same type of unit as the New York Jets.

So, what exactly is the appeal of Fields?

Well, he is significantly younger than Wilson. A decade younger, as a matter of fact. Fields has the potential for a future, whereas the 35-year-old Wilson is obviously on the downside of his career.

That being said, Fields did not exactly show a whole lot in three seasons with the Chicago Bears, and he hasn’t been overly impressive in the preseason with the Steelers, either.

But, Fields is heading into the final year of his deal, and Pittsburgh may want to see if he has what it takes to be the club’s quarterback of the future.

If the Steelers place more value on the long haul over the outside shot of potentially contending for a championship this year, Fields may be the more prudent option.

Either way, Pittsburgh’s situation at signal-caller is not what one would call ideal.
