The biggest story involving the Dallas Cowboys right now is the status of star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. He has been absent from everything this offseason, as he skipped mandatory minicamp and has yet to report to training camp.
This is happening because he is looking for a new contract extension. He wants to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL, a title that Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings landed earlier this offseason.
That does not seem like a number that Dallas is willing to go to yet. Jerry Jones has said there is no urgency to get a deal done, but the closer it gets to the regular season, the higher the odds are that Lamb will not be on the field in Week 1.
This situation is one that makes Fantasy Football owners a little anxious. That is because anyone who has done their draft already used premium capital on the Cowboys’ star pass catcher.
Despite his absence from everything team-related this offseason. CeeDee Lamb is among the most highly-ranked players in the Fantasy Football world. As shared by Nathan Jahnke of PFF , he is the No. 2 ranked player overall and No. 1 wide receiver.
That lofty ranking is certainly deserved based on his performance on the field. He was the No. 1 ranked wide receiver last season and is in a position to do that again in 2024.
Last season, CeeDee Lamb led the NFL with 135 receptions, gaining 1,749 yards with 12 touchdowns. All three stats were career-highs, as he finished third in the Offensive Player of the Year voting, was on the All-Pro First Team and was picked as a Pro Bowler.
There is a chance that his opportunities to score in 2024 actually go up. The Cowboys moved on from Michael Gallup and did very little in the way of replacing him. Jalen Tolbert will likely be moved into a more prominent role, but it is hard to envision him taking targets away from Lamb.
Given his massive role in the offense and lack of competition to take targets away, CeeDee Lamb is an ideal target early in drafts. The only thing that is holding him back currently is not being in training camp.
How long of a ramp-up period will he need during the regular season? He has already missed a large chunk of training camp and may not be ready for a full complement of snaps early in the season.
There are also injury concerns for a player who wasn’t at camp. CeeDee Lamb is certainly working out on his own, but there are benefits to being in training camp with your teammates that he is missing out on.
