The 2024 NFL Season Could Be Ugly For New York Giants

The New York Giants had a few clear goals entering the 2024 offseason. Upgrading the supporting cast on offense was imperative if this team was going to take any positive steps this upcoming season.

That goal became even more important when two of their key playmakers, running back Saquon Barkley and tight end Darren Waller, both departed. Barkley left in free agency, signing a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles . Waller opted to retire after one season with the team.

To replace them, Joe Schoen signed veteran running back Devin Singletary to start things off. In the 2024 NFL Draft, he selected running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. and tight end Theo Johnson.

The biggest splash that as made on the offensive side of the ball was landing LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick. Combine that with an offensive line that will feature at least three new starters alongside All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas, and this unit is going to see improvements.

Defensively, the Giants made a big move in a trade with the Carolina Panthers. They acquired star edge rusher Brian Burns in a blockbuster deal, adding him to a defensive front that already had star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and emerging edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.

There is no doubt the team added some talent to the mix and should be better in 2024. But, huge voids remain in the secondary, where safety Xavier McKinney was lost to the Green Bay Packers in free agency. There will be growing pains on the last line of defense with how inexperienced the cornerbacks and safeties are.

What should be New York’s outlook heading into the 2024 campaign? In the opinion of Dan Pizzuta of The 33rd Team , things will be ugly for Big Blue.

He put together a piece making predictions about every team’s over/under for the season. The Giants have been set at 6.5 wins, but Pizzuta believes they won’t reach that number.

“The surprise 2022 season stemmed from avoiding trouble spots for Daniel Jones. He was often used on bootlegs to get him out of the pocket, which allowed him to scramble in space if there were no option receiving options. When he did throw, he had the lowest average depth of target in the league.

Even if the New York Giants wanted to scheme that way again, it could be difficult. Jones might not be the same runner off his torn ACL, and they have a top wide receiver who might be force-fed the ball all over the field.

That could leave Jones susceptible to more pressure and tight throws, which could cause more sacks and interceptions,” Pizzuta wrote.

2024 is a make-or-break season for Jones. He needs to prove that he is worth keeping as the team’s long-term answer at quarterback. But, if they go under on their 6.5 wins, they will be looking at a top-10 pick and likely a new franchise quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
