Detroit Lions Emerge As Trade Suitor for Jets’ Star

The New York Jets’ 2024 season opener didn’t go as planned, as they suffered a loss to the San Francisco 49ers during Monday Night Football.

Despite entering the game as underdogs by more than a field goal, the Jets had hoped to keep things closer against a team widely considered a Super Bowl favorite.

What stood out was the uncharacteristic struggle of the Jets’ defense, which gave up 32 points and was physically outmatched by San Francisco’s offensive line.

The defense couldn’t contain the run game and failed to apply consistent pressure on 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy—a glaring issue for a unit that was supposed to excel in that area. The absence of edge rusher Haason Reddick was especially noticeable in the loss.

Reddick’s ongoing contract standoff has turned into a serious distraction for the team, with the player racking up around $1 million in fines. His decision to skip the season opener suggests that he’s digging in during negotiations.

Having already made a formal trade request before the season began, it seems increasingly likely the Jets may have to entertain the idea of dealing Reddick.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently identified Reddick as a potential trade candidate, with the Detroit Lions emerging as a logical destination. The Lions have the financial flexibility to offer Reddick the new contract he’s seeking and are legitimate contenders in the NFC.

“The Lions could do the same, and they should be interested in adding a high-end complement opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Detroit’s defense looked solid against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, but with their Super Bowl window just opening, the Lions shouldn’t be afraid to add more difference-makers if the opportunity to do so arises.”

A trade to Detroit would be a win-win, as Reddick and Aidan Hutchinson would form a formidable tandem on the defensive front, strengthening the Lions’ pass rush.

For the Jets, despite their aspirations of competing this season, the situation with Reddick has become a headache. It’s uncommon for players to sit out games due to contract disputes, and this one is starting to cast a negative light on the organization.

Given the circumstances, it might be in the New York Jets’ best interest to part ways with Reddick and focus on resolving the distraction while gaining value through a trade.
