2 Reasons To Be Concerned About Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was hyped up to be a potential Super Bowl option this season. While not mathematically out of the running just yet, the Bears rookie clearly has a lot of learning to do. Losing to CJ Stroud in Week 2 puts his Week 1 miracle win in perspective.

After two weeks, the pressure is on Williams to elevate the team, or the 2024 season will blend in with most of the last couple of decades of struggle in Chicago.

Here’s a look at why Bears fans are right to be concerned about Williams.

Falling passer rating

It is typical for rookie quarterbacks to have games with a low passer rating. The NFL is a very difficult place to learn. However, the expectation is to see rookie quarterbacks like Williams trend upward. After his second game of the year, Williams’ passer rating slipped from an already tepid 55.7 to 51.0.

This is in spite of the Bears adding star Keenan Allen, rookie receiver Rome Odunze, and up-and-coming running back D’Andre Swift.

It is normal to expect a rough outing for a first-year quarterback, but it is alarming to see a quarterback get access to those weapons and take a step back with more repetitions. This means the defense might be catching up to Williams faster than he can learn, which is a formula for trouble.

Caleb Williams might have prepared for the 2024 season completely backward

After Patrick Mahomes’ viral behind-the-back completion in the preseason, clips surfaced online of Williams practicing his own behind-the-back pass. Put simply, he may have spent the offseason trying to learn to sprint instead of trying to learn to run. In other words, he may have put his eggs in the wrong basket this offseason.

If that is true, Williams may struggle for the rest of the year as he attempts to painfully refocus on learning the basics.

One can only hope that if this is the issue, Williams has already identified it as such. Otherwise, it could be months of looking for which way is forward before he then finally decides to slow it down and get back to basics.

By that time, fan frustrations could start a chain reaction leading to Caleb Williams setting sail much too quickly.
