Former NFL quarterback Tommy Kramer, the Minnesota Vikings’ iconic quarterback nicknamed “Two-Minute Tommy” for his penchant for late-game heroics, recently shared sobering news with his fans.

The 69-year-old Pro Bowler, who led the Vikings from 1977 to 1990, announced on social media that he has been diagnosed with dementia.

Kramer’s announcement comes on the heels of another NFL legend, Brett Favre, revealing his battle with Parkinson’s disease. These back-to-back disclosures highlight the ongoing health challenges that many former NFL players face long after their playing careers have ended.

During his 13-year career, Kramer was known for his ability to rally the team, often pulling off thrilling comebacks. He finished his NFL tenure with nearly 25,000 passing yards and 159 touchdowns. But now, his greatest challenge lies off the field.

Kramer was diagnosed with dementia last year after visiting the Cleveland Clinic, where doctors estimated he has between 2 to 10 years ahead of him.

Despite the prognosis, Kramer received a bit of good news during a recent check-up, which revealed no further progression of the disease.

In a statement to fans, Kramer’s optimism was palpable. “Please, no sympathy,” he wrote. “I’ve lived a great life and wouldn’t change a thing. Nobody wanted to win more than me, and I never gave up, and that’s exactly how I’m going to battle this.”

His words echo the determined spirit that defined his playing days. On the field, Kramer was relentless, and now, as he faces this new chapter, he’s channeling that same tenacity into his fight against dementia.

Kramer, like many retired NFL players, acknowledges the risks that come with a career in football, but he has no regrets. The sport, he says, gave him incredible opportunities, for which he is deeply grateful.

While Kramer is financially secure, he expressed concern for some of his former teammates, particularly those who may not have the same financial stability or access to quality care.

By sharing his diagnosis, Kramer hopes to raise awareness about the need for better long-term care for retired NFL players, many of whom grapple with the lasting effects of head injuries sustained during their careers.

True to his character, Kramer remains focused on connecting with his loyal fan base. He plans to continue traveling to small towns across the country, meeting fans and making memories for as long as he’s able.

His final message to fans was classic Kramer: “We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time.”

As the football world rallies around “Two-Minute Tommy,” many are hopeful that, just as he did so many times on the gridiron, Kramer will mount yet another inspiring comeback.
