Authorities have arrested a Jefferson man in connection to a deadly robbery in a rural area south of Nicholson, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Monday.

The GBI said William Austin, 21, of Tanglewood Road, is charged with murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence. He also has a hold due to a pending charge in Wilkes County.

The charges were filed in connection with the slaying of Antowne Shalmar Lay, 29, of Athens, who was found dead Friday at the intersection of Antioch Church and Gus Barnett roads, an area located south of the city limits of Nicholson.

The manner of death has not been disclosed, but the charges show it occurred during an alleged robbery.

Austin remains in the Jackson County Jail without bond. The GBI said it is still investigating the homicide.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the GBI at 706-552-2309 or the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at 706-367-8718.
