When you think of Louisiana, you may imagine jazz-filled streets, vibrant culture, and most importantly, unforgettable food. From the heart of Cajun country comes a dish that brings the warmth of the bayou straight to your table: Homemade Cabbage Soup. This isn't just any cabbage soup—this is a flavorful experience inspired by Louisiana's rich culinary heritage.

Louisiana cuisine is known for its bold spices and soul-soothing flavors, and this cabbage soup delivers all of that in a single bowl. Whether it's chilly weather or just a craving for something hearty and healthy, this dish combines fresh vegetables with a burst of Cajun seasoning to create a soup that will warm you from the inside out.

    The Essence of Louisiana Flavor:

Cabbage, onions, and carrots come together in a light yet flavorful broth, infused with a blend of Cajun spices. Imagine that first spoonful—each bite carrying a delicate crunch of cabbage, a punch of flavor from smoked sausage or ham, and the perfect amount of heat from cayenne pepper. This isn’t just soup; it’s a taste of Louisiana in every bite.

Recipe: Louisiana Style Homemade Cabbage Soup

    Ingredients:

    • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped
    • 1 large onion, diced
    • 2 large carrots, sliced
    • 4 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 lb smoked sausage or ham, sliced
    • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
    • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
    • 2 tsp Cajun seasoning
    • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
    • Salt and black pepper to taste
    • 2 tbsp olive oil
    • Fresh parsley for garnish

    Instructions:

    1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the sausage or ham and cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove the meat and set it aside.
    2. In the same pot, add the onions, carrots, and garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
    3. Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook for another 5 minutes until the cabbage begins to wilt.
    4. Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth, diced tomatoes, and the browned sausage. Bring to a simmer.
    5. Add the Cajun seasoning, cayenne pepper (if using), and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer the soup for 20-25 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the flavors meld together.
    6. Serve hot with a sprinkle of fresh parsley on top, and maybe a slice of warm crusty bread on the side.

A Bowl of Comfort with Louisiana Spirit:

This cabbage soup is the perfect mix of fresh vegetables and hearty meat, with that signature Louisiana spice blend that gives it a little kick. Whether you’re cooking for family or just looking to enjoy a warming meal, this dish brings comfort and a taste of the South to your table. It’s simple yet packed with layers of flavor—perfect for cozy evenings or whenever you crave something wholesome and delicious.

If you’re making this for weight loss try putting in baby portobello mushrooms in it instead of meat. The texture is like having meat.
