I first came across this delicious recipe on the "Recipes by Lisa" Facebook Page (check out the page here), and after trying it myself, I just had to share it with all of you. These fried cheese bites are super versatile and pair beautifully with marinara sauce, ranch, or even a spicy aioli for dipping.

    A Little Backstory

Fried cheese has been a beloved comfort food for generations, from mozzarella sticks to fried halloumi. But these bite-sized cheese morsels take it up a notch! Inspired by popular street foods and the global love of cheese, this recipe combines the classic taste of mozzarella with flavorful seasonings, making each bite as indulgent as the last. Freezing the cheese bites before frying ensures the perfect crispy exterior without the cheese melting too quickly.

    Ingredients:

    • 12 oz mozzarella cheese block (or cheese of your choice), cut into bite-sized cubes
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 2 large eggs, beaten
    • 1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • Vegetable oil, for frying
    • Marinara sauce or ranch dressing, for dipping

    Directions:

    1. Prepare the Coating:
Set up a breading station with three bowls:
      • Bowl 1: Combine flour with a pinch of salt and pepper.
      • Bowl 2: Beaten eggs.
      • Bowl 3: Panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
    2. Coat the Cheese:
Dredge each cheese cube first in the seasoned flour, then dip it into the beaten eggs, and finally coat it generously in the seasoned panko mixture. Make sure each cheese bite is well-coated. Repeat until all cubes are covered.
    3. Chill:
Place the coated cheese bites on a tray and freeze for about 30 minutes. This step is essential to prevent the cheese from melting too quickly when frying.
    4. Fry the Cheese Bites:
Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat, aiming for a temperature of about 350°F (175°C). Fry the cheese bites in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 1-2 minutes until they’re golden brown and crispy.
    5. Drain and Serve:
Once fried, use a slotted spoon to transfer the cheese bites to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve them hot with your favorite dipping sauce—marinara, ranch, or any condiment you love!

    Tips for the Best Results:

    • Cheese Options: While mozzarella is a classic choice, you can try other cheeses like cheddar, gouda, or even pepper jack for a spicier kick.
    • Freezing Is Key: Don’t skip the freezing step. It ensures the cheese stays firm while frying, resulting in a perfectly gooey interior without a messy, melted cheese disaster!
    • Dipping Sauces: Get creative with your dipping sauces! Try a creamy garlic aioli, a tangy BBQ sauce, or even a sriracha mayo for a spicy twist.

    Variations:

    • Gluten-Free: Swap the all-purpose flour and panko breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
    • Spice It Up: Add some cayenne pepper or chili powder to the breadcrumb mixture for an extra kick of heat.
    • Vegetarian: This recipe is naturally vegetarian-friendly, as long as you’re using vegetarian-friendly cheeses.

These Fried Cheese Bites are great as appetizers or as a snack for a cozy night in. They pair wonderfully with cold beer or soda and make a great addition to any party platter. The combination of crispy coating and melted cheese is always irresistible, so be sure to make extra—these will go fast!
