NITRO, WV (WOWK)- Metro 911 of Kanawha County is hosting a Pro-Am pickleball tournament this weekend, featuring more than 200 athletes. With so many athletes competing, it’s the largest pickleball tournament in the state of West Virginia.
The tournament kicks off on Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Nitro Athletic Complex pickleball courts and will run until 4 p.m. The first day will be comprised of amateur players. Multiple brackets have been made for singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches.
13 News spoke with Stacie Archer, an amateur pickleball player, about her goals for the tournament.
“First and foremost, I want to have fun. If I bring home a little hardware, that’s just icing on the cake,” said Archer.

The Executive Director of Metro 911 Kanawha County, John Rutherford, spoke on how the brackets were put together.
“What we do is we rate people by their age, so you play against people in your age group. Once we get your age group, we also rate you by your skill level. 3.0 is beginner, 5.0 is an expert,” said Rutherford.
The professionals will play on Sunday, starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. The winner of this tournament will be awarded a $15,000 cash prize.
Susannah Barr, the Association of Pickleball Players’ number one ranked female player, will be competing on Sunday. She also hosted a clinic for all Intermediate skill level players today. She will host another clinic for Intermediate players on Monday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and a clinic for Intermediate/Advanced players from 10 a.m. to noon.
