A hurricane watch has been issued for part of Florida as a strengthening tropical system, soon to become Tropical Storm Debby, approaches the state over the weekend. Tropical Depression Four is forecast to strengthen while moving northward along the Florida Peninsula's Gulf coast this weekend, spreading rain, gusty winds and severe thunderstorms slowly northward. AccuWeather meteorologists warn that not only may the feature become a hurricane, but it may also later stall along the southeastern United States coast next week.

The cutoff low pressure system that made its north through New England Monday night into Tuesday morning. This combined with a very moisture-rich atmosphere and the slow moving nature of the system led to intense showers and storms surviving well into the overnight hours. Storm training, when multiple storms move over the same area, set up across northeast Vermont. This led to a rather extreme amount of rain to fall in a very short period of time. We'll go into more detail on the setup of this storm in a later post.

The remnant low that was Tropical Storm Debby continues to track northward. The low center is moving through Central Pennsylvania and will turn eastward across Upstate NY and Northern New England. This means the heaviest rain will track well to the west with flash flood issues from Central and Western Pennsylvania to Central and Northeastern NY and Northern New England. For areas on the east side of the low track showery rains and thunderstorms will occur and there is elevated severe weather risk from Southeast Virginia northward through Maryland, Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, much of the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, northeastward into New England.

Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to pound the islands with flooding rain and damaging wind gusts, and forecasters warn that the storm is expected to become a hurricane sometime Wednesday.

The tropics have become more active over the past few weeks with the development of Hurricane Debby, which made its first US landfall in Florida, and then a second US landfall in South Carolina as a tropical storm.

Hot on its heels was Invest 98L and then Potential Tropical Cyclone Five, which began to organize as it moved over the warm waters of the tropical Atlantic Ocean and eventually became what is now Tropical Storm Ernesto.
