New firefighters and engines. Unions credit director, who runs FD like a $30M business.
Kenneth Douglas’ first six months on the job as Trenton’s fire director were, in a word, bumpy. He arrived in the late summer of 2021 and firefighters were leery of another outsider being named to the post. He’d served as a firefighter in Newark and director in Orange.
Dear Abby: My husband, who plugs my nose when I snore, doesn’t know what love is
DEAR ABBY: I have been married to my husband, “Mark,” for 13 years. During this time, I have realized that marrying him was a mistake. His parents didn’t have a healthy marriage, and I know he doesn’t know what love is. His dad often traveled for work and kept a mistress on the side. My mother-in-law stayed in the marriage anyway.

Pitman's Sharkey twins support each other through the highs, lows and milestones
As young kids, they were always trying to outdo each other on the baseball field, constantly battling to see who could hit the ball harder, throw it farther or run faster. That sense of healthy competition has stayed with twin brothers Brayden and Connor Sharkey as they’ve gotten older, but at the same time, there’s never been a question of their support for one another. It was there growing up and throughout their recently completed careers at Pitman — which was historic for one of them — and it will remain for the next chapter, however it unfolds.
Moving on in a post-Menendez world | Letters
Concerning the recent Star-Ledger editorial, “It’s (Gov. Phil) Murphy’s move on Menendez seat: Appoint Andy Kim ASAP,” regarding the U.S. Senate vacancy to be created by the likely resignation or expulsion of Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez. I was a volunteer for the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s...

DEAR ANNIE: I run a small bed and breakfast in a very small, rural, up-and-coming town. We have recently had a number of guests who are in their 90s who have had health issues or injuries while staying with us. This has me very much on edge. Many of these...
Dear Annie: Sober couple would rather not split the check when dining with friends who drink
DEAR ANNIE: For the past 10 years, my husband and I have enjoyed dining out with a couple of our friends, always splitting the check evenly. Recently, we embraced sobriety and no longer consume the expensive drinks that significantly add to the bill. Despite this, we continue to split the check evenly, which doesn’t seem quite fair.
‘Stop the presses!’ How we rip up the front page when news breaks after deadline
Like other major historical events, we’re all likely to remember where we were when news broke of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday, July 13. The first notification I got was at 6:28 p.m. local time via a company group chat platform. A weekend editor...

Nothing funny about Trump’s survival scare | Editorial
“Too soon?” stand-up comics will often ask their audiences after a joke about a recent tragedy lands with a well-earned thud. Some tragedies do become legitimate humor targets with the passage of time. Some jokesters will turn the “too soon?” crutch on its head, by uttering the phrase after telling a stinker gag about, say, the Abraham Lincoln assassination.
This Menendez thing is bad for our image | Sheneman
From time immemorial, New Jersey has been the butt of jokes, subject to lame attempts at humor from hacks whose knowledge of the bucolic wonders of our state is limited to what can be gleaned while staring out the driver’s side window when waiting to enter the Holland Tunnel.
