Eight New Jersey hospitals earned spots on U.S. News & World Report's 2024-2025 Best Hospitals state rankings.

In the latest, Hackensack University Medical Center at Hackensack Meridian Health takes the No. 1 spot in New Jersey for the second year in a row . Released July 16 and now in its 35th year Best Hospitals evaluated more than 4,500 facilities across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. This year's list includes 466 "Best" hospitals. No New Jersey facilities appear on this year's Honor Roll.

"Choosing the right hospital to match your needs shouldn't be a guessing game,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “The 2024-2025 edition of Best Hospitals provides patients and their families clear, data-driven insights on hospital performance and empowers Americans to choose the facility best suited to their specific health care needs.”

HUMC moved into the lead position last year, replacing Morristown Medical Center. For the New York-metro area, the HMH facility ranked fifth on the current assessment. The hospital also secured national rankings for eight specialties the most of any New Jersey hospital:

    • Cancer: No. 44

    • Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery: No. 41

    • Diabetes & Endocrinology: No. 25

    • Geriatrics: No. 34

    • Neurology & Neurosurgery: No. 23

    • Orthopedics: No. 25

    • Pulmonology & Lung Surgery: No. 22

    • Urology: No. 17

Atlantic Health System's Morristown Medical Center ranked in four specialties: Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery (No. 49); Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (No. 44); Orthopedics (No. 16); and Urology (No. 31).

Another member of the HMH network, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, was the only other Garden State hospital with a ranked specialty, reaching No. 35 in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

New Jersey hospitals also held distinction as regional leaders, with several earning recognition in their local metros.

The other ranked N.J. hospitals and select accolades include:

      • New York-metro area: No. 10; High performing for Geriatrics

    • No. 3 Valley Hospital - Ridgewood

    • No. 4 Jersey Shore University Medical Center at Hackensack Meridian Health - Neptune

      • New York-metro area: No. 18

All New Jersey hospitals except Cooper and Jefferson marked at least one high performing adult specialty in the rankings. However, the South Jersey facilities earned their own distinction. This year, for the first time, U.S. News also identified the Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access. Of the 98 hospitals announced earlier in June, Cooper and Jefferson were the only two from New Jersey to make that list .

    How it's done:

To determine its rankings, U.S. News evaluates each hospital's performance on objective measures. These factors include risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care.

We made a number of methodological changes to both rankings and ratings this year," explained U.S. News Senior Health Data Scientist Dr. Min Hee Seo. "And most importantly, we are adding Medicare Advantage data to one of the outcome measures. This will allow us to conduct a more comprehensive evaluation of the hospitals because patient populations are better represented with this additional data.”

According to Harder, the addition of Medicare Advantage information added "millions of records of patients ... who received care at the hospitals we evaluate." He also noted the "unprecedented amount of outpatient care" included, such as emergency care or same-day surgeries.
