Closing of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier marks end of an era in Ocean City

After 94 years, a landmark spot on the Ocean City Boardwalk will soon close its doors.In a letter released on Aug. 9, Jay Gillian, Ocean City Mayor and current operator of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier , announced the news regarding his family business.

“After 47 incredible years working on the Ocean City Boardwalk, I have little choice but to retire and close Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and 6th Street Pizza and Grill, embarking on a new chapter in my life,” Gillian wrote. “The memories I’ve made with my family and the joy of meeting so many wonderful team members and guests will always hold a special place in my heart. The 94 years of tradition at Gillian’s amusements on the Boardwalk have been cherished by so many people none more than me.”

Gillian reflected on the start of his career beginning at age 13 and working his way up the family business by being a jack-of-all-trades.

“It’s been my life, my legacy, and my family,” said Gillian. “It’s sad to let go.”

Noting the increasingly difficult challenges of operating the business, Gillian said he tried to sustain operations for as long as possible. In 2021, Gillian’s was put up for auction after defaulting on loans.

Gillian gave an update about the next steps.

“But it’s no longer a viable business. We will terminate our multi-year lease in a couple months,” said Gillian. “Wonderland and 6th Street Pizza will remain open through Indian Summer Weekend (Oct. 7-9 in Ocean City) to give everybody plenty of time to use up their tickets.”

Gillian closed the letter by saying he was unsure about what’s next for the pier after the business closes.

“The property itself is no longer mine, so I can’t speak to its future,” Gillian wrote. “But I’ll always have a lifetime of priceless memories, and I hope you will too. Thank you for all the amazing years and for being such an important part of our journey.”
