    PATH marks 10M TAPPs milestone

As the rollout of PATH’s Total Access PATH Payment system continues, riders are quickly adopting the new tap-to-pay system.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the latest milestone Aug. 13 that TAPP has been used more than 10 million times since its December 2023 launch.

TAPP is an open-loop contactless payment system allowing customers to use any contactless credit/debit card or the digital wallets in their own devices at PATH turnstiles instead of specific PATH-issued SmartLink cards or pay-per-ride MetroCards.

“The enthusiastic embrace of our new tap-to-play fare system for PATH shows that riders want quick and seamless payment options as part of a modern 21 st century public transit rider experience,” Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said in a statement.

“We are very excited to reach 10 million tap-and-go entries so quickly, which tells us that PATH customers are ready to TAPP into the future of a fare payment technology that isn’t tied to a specific fare card,” added Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton.

“Ten million served is a big achievement for PATH and reflects how quickly and readily our riders have responded to TAPP,” said Clarelle DeGraffe, general manager and director of PATH.

Since May, TAPP has been available at select turnstiles at all New Jersey and New York PATH stations with adoption rates quickly reaching more than half of fare entries since launching. The rollout is part of a planned transformation of the PATH’s fare system resulting in the replacement of the legacy SmartLink and MetroCards, which are still operational and being accepted during this transition period.

“As we move toward a full transition to TAPP, we hope the customers who have yet to experience the ease of this new fare payment system will try to TAPP using their own credit card, debit card, or smartphone wallet,” said Cotton.

“We will continue to look for ways to enhance the customer experience as we work to modernize PATH and improve service for riders throughout the system,” said O’Toole.
