Rebuilt Cordova Small Boat Harbor Opening for Summer
The Cordova Small Boat Harbor is opening for business upon completion of a two-year, $40 million renovation and upgrade. Turnagain (formerly Turnagain Marine Construction) executed the design-build contract to replace the old harbor, significantly expanding its capacity to accommodate 727 vessels and making it one of Alaska’s largest single-basin harbors.
Akiak without power for daysDonations accepted for community
The Kuskokwim village of Akiak has been without continuous power since June 13th, 2024, according to an online post. Problems with outages began on May 13th including no power for a stretch of five days (May 22-26). On Day 12 of the outage on June 27th, community member Phyllis Williams reached out to folks in Bethel for help for the people with no generators who lost all the food in their freezers.

Anchorage Summer Meal Program Ensures Kids Eat Well for Free
School's out for the summer. And while the kids are no doubt enjoying no homework they may be missing out on a proper meal every day. The Anchorage School District's summer meal program helps make sure kiddos have full bellies all year round. All city hall offices for the community of Nome have temporarily relocated. Nome City Hall is going through an overhaul of its heating and ventilation systems, as well as its boiler. Due to all the work all of the offices normally located in city hall have relocated to either the public safety building or the Richard Foster Building. Prosecutors have released photographs of a possible third victim in the case of Brian Smith, who was convicted in February of killing two Alaska Native women. The images allegedly came from one of Smith’s cellphones and were included in a sentencing memorandum filed last week, just ahead of Smith’s sentencing, which is set to begin Friday morning.

Anchorage man fired shotgun at police and stranger before officers shot him, charges say
A man shot and critically injured by Anchorage police on Monday morning had fired a shotgun at officers and threatened others, according to a charging document. According to a criminal complaint filed this week, officers were called by an employee of a Circle K gas station on Bragaw Street who said that a man in camouflage clothing was yelling at another customer while holding a shotgun.
Citizen scientists volunteer their time to photograph rock
Along the shoreline of Knight Island, in a cove called Snug Harbor, sits a rock. David Janka knows this rock very well. He plans to visit Snug Harbor this July, and his visit will mark his tenth consecutive summer of photographing the boulder, also known as Mearns Rock. He hopes it won’t be his last.
