Norfolk police are investigating after they say a woman was shot on E. Olney Rd. in the Calvert Square apartment complex Wednesday.
Norfolk Police Department Community Relations Manager Karen Parker-Chesson said officers went to the area around 4 p.m. after someone called 911 to report two men arguing.
When officers got there they found the woman, who they say was an innocent bystander, shot.

Parker-Chesson couldn't say Wednesday afternoon where or how many times the woman was shot, but said her injuries were considered non-life threatening.
Norfolk City Council Member John "JP" Paige represents the area where the shooting happened. He was at a Juneteenth celebration nearby and came to the scene when he heard about the shooting.
He said gun violence is a problem nationwide and people need to come together to combat it.

"Traditionally, we've had some issues with violence in this area that have gotten a whole lot better. (It's) unfortunate that we dealing with this today, but our violence interupters are already on the scene," Paige said.
“All it takes is one person to live by the gun to change a community into several people that will defend themselves from that one person and you have others that begin to live by the gun. So this, too, is a cancer and we need to treat it as such. But we have to do it as a community, we have to do this."

As of Wednesday afternoon, police weren’t sure if the two men who were reportedly arguing shot the woman. But Parker-Chesson said they are considered suspects and police are looking for them.
"We will have more officers in the area in the wake of this incident just to give residents a bit of comfort, to let them know we're here," Parker-Chesson explained.

The shooting comes one day after a homicide in Norfolk.
"Certainly, it is taxing on our officers and the resources, however this is what they're trained to do," Parker-Chesson said when asked how much of a strain having back-to-back gun violence incidents puts on the department's resources.
Michael Lewis Jr., 27, has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with Tuesday's homicide, police say.
