Longtime pharmacy in Downtown Norfolk to close this week

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – News that a longtime pharmacy in the heart of Downtown Norfolk is closing may be a tough pill for its customers to swallow.

The MacArthur Good Neighbor Pharmacy has been a staple along Granby Street for more than 20 years. It opened in 2000.

A sign on the door says “due to the unfavorable reimbursements and contracts that have been forced on our business, we are having to close our doors.”

The last day of business is this Wednesday.

Beginning on Thursday, July 18, customers will be able to fill and pick up prescriptions at the Rite Aid store located at 525 West 21st Street in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk. This location is less than two miles away. The phone number there is 757-625-6073. Some of the employees from the MacArthur Pharmacy will be moving over to that Rite Aid location as well, the sign states.

This is the latest in a string of independent Norfolk pharmacies to close in a year or so.

As WAVY reported, Colley Discount Pharmacy closed in March, 2023 after serving the city for more than 30 years. Its customers were also sent over to the Rite Aid on W. 21st St.

Hague Pharmacy at CHKD closes abruptly

A month prior, the Hague Pharmacy at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters closed abruptly, after its lease was terminated.
