NORFOLK, Va.(WAVY)– Crews with Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded to an early morning fire in Norfolk that left a teenager injured.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue was called to the 2900 block of South Cape Henry Avenue just after 3 a.m. for the report of a residential structure fire. When crews arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a two-story duplex.

A woman who lives in the duplex told 10 On Your Side the fire started on the left side of the building.

The woman, who is six-months pregnant, said she got a bang on her door saying there was a fire. She and her family then exited the building and called 911. Her property manager, Sandra Norell, also came to the scene after being called.

“When I got the call, she was upset, she was crying,” Norell said. “she was just trying to explain quickly. And I told her, ‘I will be there. Give me 15 minutes. I live in Norfolk as well. I’ll be right over,’ so I could come and see because I could tell she was so upset. I wasn’t really sure the way she was describing it. And I just wanted to make sure everyone was out of the house.”

Crews made an interior and exterior fire attack and were able to stop the fire from spreading to one of the units. That unit has minor smoke damage. Fire control was called at 3:34 a.m.

“The smaller unit which is the right side, that sustained a lot of smoke damage,” Norell said. “The left side is pretty much a total loss.”

One occupant, a 14-year-old boy according to his guardian, was injured during the fire and taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The guardian said the teen had smoke inhalation and facial burns. No other injuries were reported.

Three people from each unit will be displaced and assisted by the Red Cross.

Crews said the fire originated from the living room, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
