The University of Oklahoma's fight song lyrics, "I'm a Sooner born and Sooner bred and when I die, I'll be Sooner dead," may actually reflect OU fans' last wishes, according to a recent poll.

The poll conducted by Choice Mutual revealed that OU's Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium is Oklahomans' top choice for where they'd like their ashes spread, illustrating how committed Sooners fans are to their fight song's message.

Oklahoma State University fans, however, were close behind in the rankings. Here's a look at the poll:

    What did the poll find?

Choice Mutual, an insurance agency specializing in final expense life insurance, surveyed 3,000 people, asking them hypothetically where they would have their ashes spread if there were no restrictions.

The top three choices among Oklahomas were:

    1. University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, or Owen Field
    2. Beavers Bend State Park
    3. Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens Stadium

National trends reflect love of nature, sports

Choice Mutual found that Americans opted to spread their ashes in places with natural beauty, sports arenas and urban and historical landmarks.

Like Oklahomans, people in Indiana also named an iconic sports arena as their preferred resting place, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Californians overwhelmingly chose Joshua Tree National Park, according to Choice Mutual, and Texans opted for the Alamo.

"These survey results are a fascinating glimpse into the personal and cultural significance we attach to our ultimate resting places," said Anthony Martin, CEO and founder of Choice Mutual. "It’s clear that people are choosing locations that resonate deeply with their experiences and identities. Whether it’s a beloved sports venue, a place of natural beauty, or a historic landmark, each choice tells a story about what matters most to us in life -and in death."

Where can you spread ashes in Oklahoma?

Some cemeteries have dedicated scattering gardens, but there are no state laws controlling where to scatter or keep ashes in Oklahoma.

Oklahomans should check city and country regulations before scattering ashes on public land. For private land, you should get permission from the landowner.
