My recent visit to Chengdu 7 left me with mixed feelings. I ventured out to try some Szechuan cuisine, enticed by the promise of homemade noodles and dumplings. The experience, however, was a rollercoaster. On one hand, the pea tips were delightful, and the chili-fried large intestine was a surprising hit. Observing the noodle-making process added a unique touch to the visit.
Unfortunately, not all dishes hit the mark. The 'husband and wife lung slices' and 'spicy diced chicken' were disappointing, with the former being spoiled and the latter overly fried. The shredded pork with garlic sauce drowned out the flavors, and the cumin beef was overpoweringly spiced for my taste. Even the once stellar hand-pulled noodles seemed to have lost their charm, tasting stale and underwhelming.
The service also left much to be desired. The staff's response to the issues was defensive and unapologetic, offering solutions that lacked consistency and failed to acknowledge the problem. Despite the bustling atmosphere and some patrons enjoying their spicy Szechuan fix, my experience was tainted by the culinary missteps and service shortcomings. It's a shame, as the restaurant once held a special place in my foodie heart. Whether I'll give Chengdu 7 another chance remains to be seen, but for now, I'm left reminiscing about the flavors that once were.
