As summer approaches, North Carolina’s lakes and beaches become a hub of activity, offering some of the best recreational water experiences in the country.

Rep. Frank Sossamon this week reminded residents and visitors to exercise utmost caution while enjoying these waters. Data from the state’s Wildlife Resources Commission reveals that June is the deadliest month for swimming and recreating in North Carolina waters.

Between 2012 and 2023, a staggering 230 people lost their lives while boating or swimming in state waterways, according to an analysis by the Charlotte Observer. Alarmingly, more than 40 of these fatalities occurred in June. Lake Norman, a vast man-made lake northwest of Charlotte, recorded the highest number of fatalities during this period.

The data indicates that about 20% of fatalities on state waterways were due to boating accidents or injuries from incidents like diving into shallow water. Approximately half of the deaths were due to drowning.

In response to these alarming statistics, the Wildlife Resources Commission launched the “Preserve Your Life” campaign in 2017. This campaign underscores the critical importance of wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) while in the water, even for those who think they don’t need one.

Representative Sossamon emphasizes, “Safety should always come first,” Sossamon said. “Whether you are boating, swimming, or simply enjoying the water, please wear a personal flotation device and be mindful of the risks. Let’s make this a safe and enjoyable summer for everyone.”
