A string of thunderstorms and showers pulls much of North Carolina out of drought

A string of thunderstorms brought some relief to North Carolina's drought conditions , dropping 2 to 3 inches of rain across the state in the past week.

Why it matters: Earlier this month, nearly 90% of the state was facing moderate, severe or extreme drought, according to the N.C. Drought Management Advisory Council .

    • But the drying trend has reversed across much of the state.

Yes, but: The drought conditions earlier this month have still had a negative impact on the corn corp in southeastern North Carolina.

    • 66% of the state's corn crop was in very poor or poor condition as of July 22, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's state field office.

Zoom in: The Triangle's counties all remain in abnormally dry conditions.

    • 5 counties — Columbus, Davie, Forsyth, Stokes and Yadkin — remain in severe drought.
    • 30 counties are still in moderate drought.

What's next: More rain is still expected in the forecast for Friday , potentially adding another inch of rain across Eastern North Carolina.
