Brig. Gen. Mitchell R. Johnson will serve as the next adjutant general of the North Dakota National Guard, Gov. Doug Burgum announced Thursday.

Johnson, who also will be director of the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services, will begin on Sept. 15. He will succeed Maj. Gen. Alan Dohrmann , who is retiring.

Johnson served as commander of the Fargo-based 119th Wing of the North Dakota Air National Guard from March 2021 to January 2024. He served as vice commander of the wing from August 2018 to March 2021 and in various other command and flying roles in Fargo, Florida, Oklahoma and Arkansas since 1998.

“Brig. Gen. Mitch Johnson has demonstrated exceptional leadership during his 12 years of active duty in the Air Force and 15 years in the National Guard, and he will serve our state and its citizens incredibly well as the 22nd adjutant general in North Dakota history,” Burgum said in a statement.

Johnson will lead the North Dakota National Guard, which has about 4,200 service members and facilities in 13 communities. He also will maintain strong relationships with the Air Force bases in Grand Forks and Minot.

“I look forward to serving the citizens of North Dakota and building on Maj. Gen. Dohrmann’s outstanding record of leadership, knowing that our National Guard soldiers and airmen and Department of Emergency Services personnel are highly capable, well-trained and well-prepared for any challenge that comes our way,” Johnson said in a statement.

Dohrmann is retiring Sept. 30 after nearly nine years as adjutant general and more than 40 years of military service.

burgums state north dakota under his policies has become corrupt, a place state employees and law enforcement break the laws, commit sx crimes, alter medical records, creating fraud in disability claims, cops assault patients in emergency rooms, while denying standing orders by my Sanford neurologists while the Sanford expansion plan was my medical assistance program. then cover it up and lie about a person's existence during an IA investigation into jpd . for 3 years I have been targeted by the local cops on the streets. as vp burgum would cause this nation to go into chaos, anarchy and fall further then what is. all going on in Jamestown north dakota. between the local cops and the north Dakota state hospital there has been recreated fraudulent medical records from the lac computers, by putting a bunch of diagnosis in my records during a supposed 5 day stay there while I was an inmate at stutsman County corrections in Feb 2018 from the 5-10, has been reported to NDAG
