Professor Coleen Edwards Leads New York Sea Grant Plankton Workshop for Teachers
Coleen Edwards, a faculty fellow in biology and environmental sciences at Niagara University, hosted a professional development workshop sponsored by the New York Sea Grant and the Center for Great Lakes Literacy. Twenty teachers and educators representing 17 school districts participated in the two-day workshop, which was held July 18-19, 2024, and focused on plankton, the organisms that form the base of the Great Lakes food web.

Neither movie was set in upstate New York, but given the violent storms our region has seen this month, one might be forgiven for imagining a future such movie telling a story rooted in Western or Central New York.It used to be that wintry weather kept Democrat and Chronicle journalists the busiest, but this year, it's been summer storms that have proved alarming. Recently, July 16, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a record State investment of nearly $51 million for public safety on Long Island. Nassau County agencies received $1,494,692 and Suffolk County agencies received $1,307,677 for the GIVE funding cycle that runs from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. This funding also includes approximately $21.1 million in one-time capital funding to 39 police departments and sheriffs’ offices – including $387,042 for the purchase of law enforcement technology and equipment to allow those agencies more effectively solve, reduce and prevent crime.
