THEATER REVIEW: ‘RENT’ plays at the Mac-Haydn Theatre through July 28
Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham, N.Y. To be clear, I do not like “RENT.” This is the fourth production I have seen and each time I feel let down and almost embarrassed that I am sitting through it. There are 20 identifiable songs in Act One, and I only like two of them: “Tango Maureen” and “La Vie Boheme.” I also enjoy the twanging electric guitar riffs on the melody of “Musetta’s Waltz,” which is referred to in a negative manner in the second act. Loosely based on Puccini’s opera “La Boheme,” this modern update retains only one character name: Mimi. However, the show blatantly exploits her manner of living, which makes her a disagreeable character, not good for the heroine of the show.

THEATER REVIEW: ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ plays at theRep through August 18
Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany, N.Y. Songs by Carole King, Gerry Goffin Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil. In 1971, Carole King issued her second solo LP, “Tapestry.” It was an instant hit and remained on the best-seller lists well into the 21st century after winning four Grammy Awards. It marked King as an instant success as a solo artist, something, according to the musical “Beautiful,” she never believed she could be. What people didn’t realize then—or understand even now—is how long and hard the road was to that success. The musical, now gracing the stage at theRep in Albany, N.Y., takes us back to her high school days in 1958, when she was just 16 years old, and showcases her life, her work, and her success as a composer of pop hits from that point on.
