NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A new detection system stopped a driver before they were able to go the wrong way on Interstate 91 in North Haven during the heavy rain, according to the police department.

The driver got lost in Wednesday’s downpour and started going up the exit ramp, according to police. The new detection system flashed lights, alerting them they were going the wrong way. The driver then turned around.

Wrong-way detection systems being installed across Connecticut

The systems use cameras to detect drivers going the wrong way on exit ramps that are considered to be high risk.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation began installing the technology last fall. It will be added to at least 120 exit ramps.

There were 23 fatal wrong-way crashes in 2022, according to CTDOT.
