Westmoreland County campus clippings: Norwin grad up for NCAA Woman of the Year award

Duquesne’s Emily Brozeski (Norwin) is one of 17 graduating student-athletes from the Atlantic 10 Conference nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

A track and field standout, Brozeski will look to advance with the winner’s fate in the hands of a selection committee.

The NCAA award originated in 1991.

A committee will select an A-10 woman of the year and a runner-up to represent the conference at the NCAA awards ceremony. Nominees for the national award must show athletic talent, leadership skills, academic standing, all-conference recognition and other credentials.

Brozeski, who earned her masters in fine arts in media and technology, completed a three-peat in the A-10 heptathlon.

Overall, she has six medals (four indoor, two indoor) and holds the Duquesne record for points in the heptathlon with 5,172.

Ten honorees will be selected in each NCAA division and those 30 women will be narrowed to a top three — in Division I, II and III.

The top selection of those nine will be the winner and will be announced as such in the fall.

Women’s softball

Seton Hill: The program’s career leader in stolen bases and runs scored is joining the coaching staff.

Nina Grandey, a talented shortstop for the Griffins, will serve as a graduate assistant to head coach Cassie Moore.

Specifically, she will work with infielders and baserunners, with an eye toward recruiting.

A two-time All-PSAC West player, Grandey hit .319 for her career with 166 hits, 137 runs, 20 doubles, 12 home runs, 74 steals and 71 RBIs.

This season, she batted .391 with a PSAC-best 67 runs, 11 doubles, three triples, six homers, 34 RBIs and 38 steals.

Women’s soccer

Seton Hill: The Griffins added an assistant coach with the hiring of Alesha Kostrzewa.

A former assistant at her college alma mater of Albany State, Kostrzewa will work with head coach Riley Butler to improve on a 7-11-1 season.

Kostrzewa played and coached with the Tallahassee Tottenham Hotspur Futbol Club.
