This North Kingstown church is unlike anything you'll find in the region

Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

Especially in the summer the trip along Route 1 from the Warwick-East Greenwich line south is one my family makes often.

We use it to escape the beach traffic or to play a round of golf at North Kingstown. My son's summer basketball team plays games in places like Wilson Park. Making the drive enough it can be easy to tune out the strip plazas, hotels and other spots, but last summer one place caught my eye, the Alpha and Omega Church for the Deaf.

A couple of weeks ago, when The Journal's Jonny Williams told me he went to the church with photographer Kris Craig I couldn't wait to read the story.

With services performed fully in American Sign Language, the church is the only of its type in the region, with the next closest in New Your City or Vermont.

Congregants come from all over for the experience, to worship and to meet new people who are also deaf.

Read Jonny's story and learn more about what's happening in this former physical therapist’s practice in North Kingstown.

    • Not only do Olympians get to perform on some of the biggest stages in their sports on international television, there are other perks involved. And if you're from Rhode Island, it's one that tells everyone just how successful you are in your field.

The Journal's Antonia Farzan has the details.

    • Rhode Islanders who have a Rhode Island Energy account for electric or natural gas will notice a slew of new changes starting on Aug. 19, 2024, the most noticeable of which will be that their bill will look different.

The Journal's Alex Kuffner has the details on everything you need to know.

    •  Save The Bay's Hamilton Family Aquarium in Newport has a new guest.

Saved from the pot and the plate by the staff and customers at the Old G ri s t Mill Tavern in Seekonk, Bruce the Orange lobster has found a new home. The Journal's Jack Perry reports on how he got there.

    • The Rhode Island Interscholastic League has finalized realignment for boys and girls basketball. The Journal's Eric Rueb looks at where the RIIL got it right and wrong.
