Tyler Hickman of Icy Straight Point on growth and managing Alaska cruising
Alaska recorded more cruise passengers than ever last year. But that growth has stressed out locals and infrastructure in some communities, such as Juneau, where in June officials struck a deal with cruise lines to limit lower berths starting in 2026. Tyler Hickman, senior vice president of Icy Strait Point, a cruise port less than 70 miles from Juneau, spoke with cruise editor Andrea Zelinski about how the destination, and others being built by parent company Huna Totem Corp., can help absorb the state's growing cruise crowds.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Expect some passing showers this morning through Southcentral. The skies will dry come afternoon, but clouds linger. Rain showers will stick around through Thursday. Come Friday, however, the clouds decrease and by the weekend some good sunshine will appear and raise temperatures into the upper 60s and low 70s.

Seldovia Village gets TsunamiReady certification
Seldovia Village Tribe became the first federally recognized Alaska Native tribe to get its TsunamiReady certification, according to a press release from the tribe on July 9. This comes from the National Weather Service and shows that a given community has a plan in place if a tsunami hits. It includes preparation, mitigation and response steps. These range from updating maps that show areas that would be hit by a tsunami to giving community presentations on what to do during a natural disaster.

Reminder: water & sewer utility rates increased July 1
Please be aware that utility rates increased effective July 1. The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly, in August of 2019 (Ord. 2019-31 & 2019-44), approved increases to both the water and sewer utility rates. The 2% rate increase will go into effect July 1.
