Mass. woman, NJ passenger ID’d in fatal Maryland crash; 2nd driver injured
A Lowell woman and her passenger both died in a Maryland crash on Wednesday, according to Maryland State Police. Norma Matthews, 81, was found dead when first responders arrived, state police said in a statement. Her passenger, Virginia Licata, 86, of Blackwood, New Jersey, was flown to Capital Region Medical Center and died at the hospital.

Salem Police Seize Drugs and Weapons in Raid at Mass Mini Mart, Two Arrested on Multiple Charges
Following an investigation into suspected narcotics trafficking at a local establishment, Salem Police executed a raid that resulted in the seizure of a substantial amount of drugs and weaponry. Detectives from the Salem Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, along with the Community Impact Unit and Patrol Division, carried out the action at 34 Boston Street, targeting the Mass Mini Mart. The department's official statement detailed the seizure of two firearms, a stun gun, an assortment of drugs including 56 grams of fentanyl, and a sum of cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

Two teens arrested, charged with robbing 9-year-old boy at gunpoint in Boston
Two teens have been arrested for allegedly robbing a 9-year-old boy of his cellphone at gunpoint in Boston Thursday, police say. The young boy was at Children’s Park at the corner of Intervale and Fernboro Street waiting for a cookout around 6:30 p.m. when two 15-year-olds approached him and took his cell phone at gunpoint, Essex County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. The two 15-year-old teens were charged with armed robbery and threat to commit a crime in West Roxbury Juvenile Court on Friday. “Being robbed at gunpoint is a terrifying experience for anyone. But the age of the victim here, and the ages of the charged juveniles, adds an extra layer of shock and heartbreak. I commend this young boy and the adults present for providing the information that led to the arrest,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.

UNH Records a 3.46 GPA in Pursuit of America East's Academic Cup
BOSTON – The University of New Hampshire recorded a 3.46 GPA to finish among the top schools in the 2023-24 Walter Harrison Academic Cup as announced Friday by America East. This is the fourth consecutive year UNH finished with a mark of 3.40 or higher in the Academic Cup. The Wildcats had a 3.44 GPA in 2022-23, captured the Cup in 2021-22 with a 3.42, and recorded a 3.47 in 2020-21. Led by America East sport GPA champions swimming and diving (3.75) and volleyball (3.71), seven of the 12 Wildcat teams in the conference tallied a GPA of 3.45 or higher. Women's cross country (3.71), women's track & field (3.62), lacrosse (3.53), men's cross country (3.51) and women's soccer (3.45) also finished with a GPA of 3.45 or higher.

Dartmouth implements water safety ‘enhancements’
Following the death of Won Jang ’26 — whose body was found in the Connecticut River on July 7 — the College is reemphasizing its water safety policies. In a joint email to campus sent on July 12, Dartmouth Student Government, Dean of the College Scott Brown and Ledyard Canoe Club sent “important safety reminders” about the use of swimming docks on the Connecticut “in light of the tragic death” of Jang. In addition to sharing swimming and “general waterfront safety” guidelines, the group wrote that there would be “additional signage” by the river as they “continue to discuss these crucial water safety issues.”
