NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Senator Pete Harckham announced in June that he has secured $100,000 in Senate grant funding for North Salem to construct a new pavilion near the children’s playground and field area in Joe Bohrdrum Park.
Town officials led by North Salem Supervisor Warren Lucas gathered with Harckham recently at the park for the announcement.
“The Town of North Salem has enhanced this important recreation area with an impressive new structure that fits in perfectly with the park’s natural surroundings,” said Senator Harckham. “I am happy to have been able to secure most of the funding for this project, while also helping to ease the burden on local taxpayers. I know that residents will definitely enjoy activities and just relaxing at the pavilion.”
Available as a meeting place for all ages and as a shelter from the hot sunshine or sudden thunderstorms, the pavilion was being enjoyed by three generations of North Salem residents when Harckham and the local officials visited the park. The funding is part of the Senate’s Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability and Technology (CREST) program.
The entire 20-foot by 40-foot open pavilion project, including its foundation with concrete piers, electric outlets and eight-foot metal green picnic tables, cost $144,087.
Joe Bohrdrum Park, known as “JB Park” and located on Sunset Drive between Purdys and Croton Falls, is North Salem's largest recreation facility and park.
“Senator Harckham’s support and grant of $100,000 allowed us to build this beautiful pavilion at JB Park,” said Lucas. “It is certainly a welcome addition to the park and will be enjoyed by park visitors for years to come.”
The awarded grant funding is part of the State Senate’s CREST grant program administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) to support community and economic development. Harckham has delivered more than $20 million of State Senate grant funding to municipalities and nonprofits in the 40th Senate District since taking office in 2019.
