NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Despite the blistering heat, a berry good time was had by all at the North Salem Historical Society’s annual Strawberry Festival.

It was held on Sunday, July 14, at the society’s headquarters, aka The White Elephant, on Keeler Lane.

Folks cooled down with bowls of their favorite summer fruit perched on shortcake and topped with mounds of whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. Lemonade, iced tea, and water was also available.

The musical duo of Martin Aronchick and Richard Brooker, aka Chick’s Candy Store, provided light jazz and historical reenactor Sean Grady enthralled all with his costumed presentation, “Life of a Militia Soldier in North Salem in 1774.”

Participants even got to drill with faux muskets while sporting Revolutionary-era black wool tricorns (three-sided hats).

Children gathered around the crafts table to make works of art with quilling paper, glitter, and paint while others played old-fashioned games in the shade of a towering evergreen tree.
