NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The North Salem Board of Education announced today that they have appointed an acting schools superintendent while the current one, Dr. Duncan Wilson, is on administrative leave.

After meeting in executive session on Monday, July 22, the board posted on the district’s website that Deputy Superintendent Dr. Adam VanDerStuyf would be stepping into the position “until further notice.”

It did not offer an explanation, but instead referred questions to BOE President Kurt Guldan.

Board Vice President Brandy Keenan promised that she and Guldan would respond to inquiries by email Monday evening, but advised North Salem News that there was “really nothing that we can say” about the situation because it involved “personal matters.”

No such email had been received by 8 p.m.

VanDerStuyf was reportedly tied up in meetings all afternoon and emails addressed to Wilson bounced back with the message with they would be “forwarded to Acting Superintendent Adam VanDerStuyf until further notice.”

The announcement noted that VanDerStuyf had been with the district since 2015. He’s held “multiple roles,” including that of director of pupil personnel services and assistant superintendent of pupil personnel services.

Wilson was appointed superintendent last year following the retirement of Dr. Kenneth Freeston.

Prior to coming to North Salem, the Scarsdale resident was assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Ardsley Union Free School District. Before that, he was director of instruction and human resources in the Briarcliff School District.

Wilson had been scheduled to participate in the Summer Book Club at the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library on Monday, July 22, and Monday, July 29. According to the flyer, he and his team were to lead a discussion of “When You Wonder, You’re Learning: Mister Rogers’ Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids” by Gregg Behr and Ryan Rydzewski.

Both dates had been cancelled, the library confirmed.
