Mike Arnone, seven-term assemblyman, dies at 91
Dr. Michael J. Arnone, an affable dentist from Red Bank who served more than fourteen years as a Republican assemblyman from Monmouth County, died on July 1. He was 91. Arnone chaired the Assembly Local Government and Housing Committee. He played a role in rolling back Gov. Jim Florio’s $2.8 billion tax increase after the GOP took control of the legislature in 1991, advocated for consolidated municipal services for small towns, and pushed for a constitutional amendment to permit a two-tiered property tax rate in urban areas. He was a staunch supporter of Monmouth County’s horse racing industry. He was a sponsor of Megan’s Law.
Under the Boardwalk officials vow to address homelessness in Atlantic City
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — In a place with a long history of people living — and sometimes dying — under the Boardwalk, Atlantic City has launched an effort to address homelessness by preventing people from sleeping on public property and connecting them with shelter and services.
Belmar Independence Day show to light up the night July 6
BELMAR — The community is welcomed to join together this weekend for the third annual Independence Day Show. The holiday celebration, presented by Raising4 Inc. and the Borough of Belmar, will light up the night with a free concert, computerized light show and fireworks display on Saturday, July 6. Surveillance Video Captures Violent Motorcycle Accident in Jackson [Graphic Warning]
A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a violent accident in Jackson, and it was all caught on surveillance video. As reported earlier this week on TLS Status (along with the video), the motorcyclist was traveling on E. Veterans Highway at about 7:30 PM on Saturday when it struck a vehicle turning into a driveway.
Longport honors winners of beach tag contest, swears-in new Beach Patrol lieutenant
LONGPORT – Members of the Longport Beach Patrol gladly agreed to let Longport’s youngest citizens take the lead during the July 3 Board of Commissioners meeting. Mayor Nicholas Russo was wearing three different beach tags designed by children who live in Longport. That’s one more than the two categories presented to budding artists in the annual beach tag design contest. Normally the children design seasonal and senior citizen beach tags, but this year there was one extra design that couldn’t be passed over.

Rehoboth Beach Man Arrested on Drug & Weapons Charges after Traffic Stop
Early Friday morning Dewey Beach Police conducted a traffic stop on Coastal Highway at Scarborough Avenue Extended in Rehoboth Beach after police observed vehicle violations. During the stop police conducted a thorough investigation and found a large fixed-blade knife in the glove compartment. Police also found a significant amount of marijuana, suspected promethazine and drug packaging paraphernalia in the vehicle. UUSD awards grants to two local nonprofits
The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware recently awarded $2,500 grants to two local nonprofit organizations serving Sussex County. Recipients for 2024 are the Sussex Preservation Coalition and Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach. Grants were made possible by the Roy Parks Memorial Social Justice Fund, which is administered by UUSD.
Lewes PD Arrest 2 on Drug & Weapons Offenses
Lewes Police with assistance from the DEA Southern Delaware Task Force conducted surveillance of a Rehoboth Beach area man which ended on June 25th with arrest. Police say 35 year old Gregory Lawson-Hixon was known to be active in illegal drug sales in the City of Lewes and during the surveillance he was seen with a large quantity of drugs and stopped after entering a vehicle driven by another subject. Lawson-Hixon was in possession of one pound of marijuana, 106 Amphetamine pills, 140 Oxycodone pills, 100 Xanax pills, 7.5 grams of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, a digital scale and $4700 in cash. Lawson-Hixon was charged with 16 felony level violations and is being held at SCI in default of $70,000 cash bail.
