Northampton Mayor Sciarra appointed to energy transformation advisory board

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Northampton’s mayor has been appointed to the energy transformation advisory board.

This advisory board’s sole purpose is to help speed up the transition from gas dependency to electric, to which Northampton has been at the forefront. Northampton introduced Climate Action and Project Administration (CAPA) in the middle of 2023, with the goal to bring more environmentally friendly policies into action.

Ben Weil, the Interim Director of CAPA, described the role of smaller cities in bringing change at the state level, “What Northampton’s already done, it gives us a lot to offer, the rest of the state. Whatever directive you get from the state, it’s gonna be implemented locally and so understanding what are the barriers to actually implementing what you wanted at the state level.”

Mayor Sciarra is only one of two Massachusetts mayors to be selected for the board. This comes off the heels of the creation of the Office of Energy Transformation back in March.
