NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – On Friday night the Oxbow Water Skit Team practiced their water ski show in Hampshire County. What show-goers will witness on the water will be one-of-a-kind, but this time the weather kept the performance from the public for just a few more days.

55 people sworn in as new U.S. citizens in Northampton

Rain or Shine the Oxbow Water Ski Team was ready to put on a show. They were set to make a splash at 7 p.m. but Mother Nature had different plans. With weather like this most sports would get canceled, but the water skiers say they aren’t afraid to get a little wet—the only thing stopping them; was thunder and lightning.

“Yeah so rain or shine we’ll go out there, so unless it’s thunder or lightning, we’ll be out on the water,” expressed Brianna Benjamin of the Oxbow Water Ski Team.

Once thunder is heard, the ski team has to wait 30 minutes without another roar, for the water to be considered ‘clear’. Even with a sport that can be unpredictable team members say they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cordelia Berndt from Northampton says there’s a lot to like about water skiing, “Being with your friends, having fun, and like, getting to perform, and not all people get to do that, and that is something cool that we get to do.”

The best part is that you don’t need to a thing or two about skiing to join.

“We have people coming from all different types of athletic backgrounds. Lots of dancers, gymnasts, from the girls that come here. We have football players, lacrosse players, basketball players. You know, but in the summer they are all looking for something to do,” says John Benjamin, the Oxbow Water Ski Show Director.

Friday’s show was unfortunately canceled due to weather, but you can watch the spectacular water ski show this upcoming Tuesday and Friday, both are at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
