Gartland has served the town of North Smithfield for many decades, working his way through the ranks and retiring as a captain at Station 1. CHARLTON — A horse that wandered to the edge of the Massachusetts Turnpike Monday morning, drawing a double-take from passing motorists, has been returned to its owner. State troopers wrangled the cooperative palomino after authorities received reports of a grazing horse to the side of the westbound lanes. A trucker from Texas joined the rescue, offering the troopers a length of rope and a helping hand.

Firefighters Kids Day returns for 43rd year to massive crowds
The crowds filled the parking lot and fields at the town’s middle school for the 43rd annual North Attleborough Firefighters Kids Day.
